Imitating your Father

Growing up my dad was my hero. He was a police officer, but as a kid he was a super hero; fighting bad guys and bringing them to justice! I would dress up in his uniform, help him with the D.A.R.E program, go to the police station, and in one word, imitate him. As I grew up I retained a lot of who he was, and to this day a lot of my actions reflect his character. I love my Dad, but he’s not perfect, as none of us are, and many of the characteristics I obtained from him I have to fight against. My lack of affection, my judgment of character, and my laziness to name a few.

Ephesians 5:1 tells us to be “Imitators of God, as beloved children”.

-We are God’s children. That in its self should bring us comfort. Though I was born a sinner (Psalm 51:5) I was given the right to become a child of God when Christ saved me (John 1:12-13).

-God is perfect (Matthew 5:48). Who is worthy to imitate and follow? How about an All Knowing (Psalm 139 1-6), Loving (1 John 4:8), Holy (Isaiah 6:3), Perfect God.

God is our perfect Father worthy of imitating.

I love my dad. He is an amazing individual and I'm so grateful to be his son; but where he fails, God provides.

"If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!"

Matthew 7:11
